Velocity can either be a helpful tool or a dangerous trap. In this episode of How I PM, Renata McCurley, experienced digital product and transformation leader, shares her approach to using velocity properly to support better team performance and business outcomes.
Renata’s Three Keys to Avoiding the Velocity Fallacy:
- Maintain transparency
Always explain what was delivered, for whom, and why it matters. Focusing only on story points or output creates the wrong incentives. - Treat velocity as one datapoint, not the full story
Velocity should be combined with transparency about what was delivered and what outcomes were achieved. - Tie velocity to real deliverables
Velocity alone is meaningless unless it supports features and work that create measurable business impact.
“Velocity is a signal, not a goal. Focus on value and outcomes, not point totals.”
