Advice…

> What is the hardest lesson you learned as a product manager?

Dates. Every product manager, despite best intentions, is always over-optimisitic with dates. We always commit to delivering products in ambitious timescales which can invariably put our backs up against the wall. I see it as derived from a desire to commit to doing to the best we can, but product managers should realize that people outside of software engineering don’t understand the dates we talk about are often estimates.

Advice…

> What is the best career advice you received as you entered product management?

Not specific to Product Management, but the best career advice I’ve had is to continue learning. I’ve continued in higher education since leaving high school, studying undergraduate degrees and assorted other courses part time in the evening and weekends. The hunger to learn means you’ll continue to push the boundaries of your own capability.

When I first at O2 as a Business Analyst I would work with the old-school style “Product Owner” to document requirements and build products. Two people really stand out – one of my early bosses whilst at O2 (Ish Sidat) had an incredible eye for detail and a knack of pulling meaningful insight from vast amounts of data, which shaped and enhanced my appreciation and usage of data. My boss whilst at Walmart/Asda (Kate Cuthbertson) was without a doubt the most customer-centric person I’ve worked with. Everything Kate did was gleaned from customers, developed with customers, validated by customers and ultimately loved by customers. I was really fortunate to grow as a product manager under both their stewardship, as it has allowed me to balance the data and analytics available against being thoroughly customer centric.

It’s an awesome way to meet fellow Product People in a laid-back, conversational environment within which sharing and learning can flourish and complement the knowledge base for all on a peer-to-peer basis. The NYC chapter of The Product Group meets the first Thursday of each month. If you are interested in a establishing chapter near you, please contact The Product Guy or The Product Group for more information. (https://tpgblog.com/theproductgroup/ )
