Excerpts from our conversation with The Best Product Person of 2017, Melissa Perri.
> What is the best career advice you received as you entered product management?
To win over my team. When I was first starting out, I had “Steve Jobs Syndrome”. I saw myself as the all-knowing hero who was going to have the best ideas about what to build. This mindset led to a lot of struggles with my development team. I was the jerk who threw over requirements to them and got offended when they gave their two cents. My boss started encouraging me to really listen to our developers and try win them over. So I asked them what they thought we should build. I asked for feedback on my designs and ideas. Turns out, surprise surprise, I didn’t have the best ideas and they had great advice. We got into a rhythm of exploring problems and solutions together before committing to anything, and we built way better products because of it. Product Managers are only as good as the teams they have working with them. We can influence, but we can’t execute on our own. If a Product Manager makes enemies out of his or her team, it’s going to be a very difficult career.
Watch now and see why she is counted amongst the ranks of the best in product management.
